Dear FACS friends:
I want to share the latest unfortunate incident of Shaken Baby Syndrome.
Not only is this horrific, but look at the slap on the hand this male.
Sadly, we have had 4 cases of SBS/SIS in the past couple of weeks in MO:
Dixon, Florissant, Grandview and Marshall (below). I just got back from the
National Conference on SBS and wanted to let you know that the National
Center on SBS at www.dontshake.com <http://www.dontshake.com/> has
materials available for the education of junior (middle?) and high school
students. I have ordered it but am curious if any of you have used it and
how effective it is. I think its $150. Doll not included.
Also, last week legislation was introduced (which you might want to pass
along to your students if you can - I know it is a grey area for many of
you). It is HR 6070 "Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act". This is a
National effort to educate many different professionals along with parents
and caregivers on SBS. The $5 million appropriated for this will also help
families who have been victimized by what most consider being the most
detrimental form of child abuse. I am currently working diligently with
Sen. Bond's office to get them to co-sponsor it in the senate. I don't
think it's going to be a problem, but of course, the more phone calls, the
more their office knows what's going on and why we need it. If any of you
would like to contact Sen. Bond's office to let them know of the importance
of this bill, please call Kara at (202) 224-5721. She is in the DC office
and who I am working with. Please tell them that you are a constituent.
That will get you farther.
Thank you for letting me post. I truly appreciate the opportunity to
partner with you all.
Although a CFD major, still love the FACS department!

Man charged in assault of baby
Monday, September 11, 2006
A Marshall man was arrested and charged with felony assault for injuries
caused to a 7-month-old child, police said.
On the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 9, Marshall Police were contacted in
regards to a child abuse/neglect hotline report involving the 7-month-old
female child who was taken to Fitzgibbon Hospital on Friday, Sept. 8. The
child was later transported to University Hospital in Columbia. An
examination there revealed injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome,
police said.
Police arrested the baby's father, Roberto Pineda, 34, of the 800 block of
W. North, and the Saline County prosecutor charged him with a class C felony
of domestic assault in the second degree.
Pineda is being held at the Saline County Jail on $50,000 cash only bond. A
class C felony is punishable by up to seven years in jail and/or up to
$5,000.
