Carol,

There is a book that would be a terrific resource for you for
this project. It is titled "Hidden In Plain View -"A Secret Story of Quilts
and the Underground Railroad." The authors are Jacqueline L Tobin and
Raymond G. Dobard, Ph.D. It is published by Doubleday. It's ISBN number is
0-385-49137-9.

The book tells how slaves used quilts that were supposedly hanging on the
fences or windowsills to air out, to give directions for safe haven for
those who were escaping from slavery. The book has great pictures,
historical significance, and is an easy read. Different quilt patterns had
different meanings or patterns within a quilt had a special meaning. It is
really interesting and wonderfully documented. It has a glossary and
pictorial examples of the quilt code patterns.

Since you're looking for enrichment and academic support, not only does this
book historically document the Underground Railroad but it also tells of the
significance of songs/spirituals (with words printed) that were prevalent at
the time. It would be a terrific resource for the kind of project you are
contemplating.

Good Luck.

Charlotte Stiens

Has anyone out there incorporated the history of quilts and
quilt making into their curriculums? If so would you be willing to share
some of your ideas with me. We have one hour each day used for enrichment
and academic support and I am looking to use that time to study the history
of fabric quilts and allow the students to design and piece a quilt top.
