Several of you have asked about a science credit for Food Science. I recall seeing a message that someone's principal wanted her to make Nutrition and Wellness a year long class and provide ½ credit unit of science. She made the statement that she could not teach food science because she did not have a science certificate. That is not the case.
First: If you have a Family and Consumer Sciences B-12, a Vocational Family and Consumer Sciences, General Home Economics or a Vocational Home Economics certificate you are certified to teach Food Science. We have a competency list for food science and the core data code for it is 096827. It will be a vocational credit.
Second: With the new option for embedded credit, a district can embed a science credit in the Food Science course. The district could also embed a science credit in the Nutrition and Wellness course.
Certification: According to the Tool Kit for Embedded Credit, the teacher of the host course, in this case Food Science or Nutrition and Wellness must have the proper certification for that course. So if you have proper FCS certification to teach Nutrition and Wellness or Food Science you do not need the science certificate. For reporting on core data, the course would be reported as a combined course. Students would receive credit for both the FCS course and the science credit that the school wants to offer.
I would suggest that you become familiar with the Tool Kit for Embedded Credit and share the information with your administrator.

I hope this helps.

Does any school have Food Science as a science credit? Please let me know what it takes for the course to be a science credit if you can. (I do have a Biology certification for 7-12) Thanks, Melinda Brown
