[TGE-mail] English ivy info needed

Hi All:
       Does anyone out there have a definitive answer as to whether or not 
English ivy growing on a brick (painted) wall damages the wall or not?  I have 
heard opinions both ways but none sufficiently authoritative.  I love the look 
of the ivy and I have seen lots of it on other homes; however my ivy is really 
flourishing.  Does the ivy actually help the integrity of the wall by 
protecting it from the weather or does it dig into the brick and grout and loosen it 
or is its effect just benign?  Thanks for any substantive answer you may give.
