What has Happened?

Make A Difference Center Partnership

The Make A Difference Center is a program under SLACO, which serves
low-to-moderate income families. MADC was established to create a greater
sense of community by providing activities and a safe environment for the
children and youth in Etzel Place Apartments and in the surrounding areas
after school.

This organizations utilizes youth volunteers that
  <http://www.stlcap.org/site/images/clip_image002_014.jpg> have grown
through this program. These volunteers have agreed to partner with St. Louis
Community Air Project by teaching other about Indoor Air Quality. They are
spreading their teachings through the Detox Your Domicile Skit that was
created through Missouri Botanical Garden's EarthWays Center and St. Louis
CAP.

Marcus Rivas and Erica Fendler teamed up to train the MADC volunteers about
Detox Your Domicile and indoor air quality. Here the volunteers learned what
are harmful chemicals that we use in our home, ways we can avoid these
chemicals and what health problems can arise from these harmful toxins in
Indoor Air.

The volunteers have agreed to perform two puppet shows, two Detox Your
Domicile skits, and two Detox trainings. The group has currently performed
one of their required puppet shows.

CAP's Display at SSM's Health Fair

SSM Health Care invited St. Louis CAP to join their 2006 Health Fair, which
is put together for their employees. St. Louis CAP was among many that
showed up to teach SSM employees how they can lead healthier and safer
lives. Grace Hills Clean Air Project joined St. Louis CAP in this effort.
(see Alycia below)

To the right Erica discusses healthy and safe cleaning options for this SSM
employee. Erica, Lauren, Alycia passed out many of the Less Toxic
Alternatives for Cleaning sheet, which contains over 50 alternatives to
hazardous household cleaning products.

St. Louis CAP taught SSM employees about Indoor Air Quality! Yes we brought
all of our great materials and giveaways that are utilized in the Detox Your
Domicile Skit. One of the ways that people participated was by having them
figure out what labels on cleaners actually mean and how they would be
categorized from lest to severely dangerous.

Let's see if you can put these labels below in the correct order:

  <http://www.stlcap.org/site/images/clip_image002_010.jpg>

Caution - Non-Toxic - Danger/Poison - Warning

After you put the labels in order from the least to most toxic, think about
each label and the amount that an average size adult could ingest for it to
cause severe harm.

Fair St. Louis CAP was asked to keep a display up in their lunch room for an
additional two weeks! SSM was very happy with the crowd we attracted during
the fair.

Green Drinks Event

Since April 2005, St. Louis Chapter of Green Drinks has brought a panel of
experts together for an informal discussion on a new environmental topic
each month. Green Drinks strives to create an opportunity for those
interested in sustainability and environmental issues to gather, network,
discuss issues important to them, and learn from one another.

St. Louis CAP was invited to the September discussion, which was their 2nd
Annual Green Car Show! The car show took place from 6 to 7:30pm and featured
more than a dozen of the greenest vehicles available:

*

Hybrids - Toyota Prius, Mercury Mariner, Ford Escape, Lexus RX 400h,
Honda Civic
*

Super fuel efficient cars - Scion XA, Smart Car
*

	Flexfuel pickup
*

	E-Max Electric Ride (electric scooter)
*

Biodeisel & Straight Vegetable Oil vehicles
*

	+ more

The panel discussion followed the car show and featured experts in biodiesel
vehicles, fuel efficiency, automotive technologies, plus information on
anti-idling ordinances & emissions-related health concerns.
  <http://www.stlcap.org/site/images/clip_image002_012.jpg>

St. Louis CAP took this opportunity to discuss their efforts to reduce
school bus idling in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. We also informed
audience members that they can take action themselves by reporting vehicles
that are idling longer than the city or county ordinance permits. We
informed participants about the health problems that may occurr from exhaust
or diesel exhaust.

What is Coming UP?

Idle Free Schools Events

  <http://www.stlcap.org/site/images/clip_image002_008_000.jpg>

St. Louis CAP is gearing up for three Idle Free Schools' events. They are a
focus group for St. Louis Public Schools stakeholders and two panel
discussions. One panel discussion will include Missouri school districts in
the St. Louis Metropolitian area, while the second will include Illinois
districts.

The focus group involves St. Louis Public School stakholders; parents,
teachers, principals, bus contractors, drivers, the director of
transportation, nurses, etc. We will keep the focus group small so that
discussion among the participants will be free-flowing and productive. We
hope the focus group will give participants the opportunity to understand
various aspects of Idle Free Schools and to work togetherto determine what
we can do to decrease school bus idling.. This event will be held November
15th 2006. We will keep you posted.

The two panel discussion will feature school districts who have already
adopted no idling policies and enforcements. Districts will share their
experiences regarding their idle free efforts. We will also invite
transportation in each school district to attend the discussions. We hope
that the information will reach schools that have not yetadopted a policy
and help many districts share ideas on the topic of idle reduction. St.
Louis CAP will hold the Missouri event on January 10th and the Illinois
event in late January or early February.

If you feel that your school district should be a part of the Panel Event
please share this information with them and/or ask them to contact Erica
Fendler at stlouiscap at hotmail.com <mailto:stlouiscap at hotmail.com%20> or
