Dear Neighbors - Updates on several subjects:
1. Special Taxing District idea. At the TGENA board meeting on 10-4-06, the board decided to hold off on pursuing the Special Taxing District idea, but to encourage the formation of a volunteer neighborhood patrol. The result of this decision is that it is unlikely that a proposal for a Special Taxing District for TGE will be on the April 2007 ballot. For those who are tuning in late, a Special Taxing District was being considered for the purpose of hiring a private security company to patrol the neighborhood, to supplement police patrols. The reasons for the board's decision include the following: concerns about the annual cost to homeowner households and the effect on property tax bills; concerns about the effectiveness of private security personnel, even if off-duty police officers were used; a feeling that crime issues tend to be cyclical and may soon abate; and a feeling that if additional police protection is needed, it should be implemented on a City-wide basis,
and no
t just on a neighborhood basis.
2. TGE Garden. I proposed a resolution at the board meeting to close the TGE Community Garden and relinquish the lot back to LRA. The TGE Garden, located at Sidney and Virginia, has needed additional involvement from neighborhood volunteers for some time, and we have had difficulty locating people to be involved with the garden and with the TGE Beautification Committee, which has not had a chairperson for several years. We recently received a notice from the Water Department that the property was showing excessive water usage. None of the current TGENA board members is able to take on the responsibility of being Beautification Chair or being responsible for the garden. This proposal to close the garden will be discussed again at the November 1st board meeting and will probably be voted upon at that time. Please pass this information along to anyone you may know who might be concerned about this issue, and ask them to contact me if they have questions or concerns or woul
d like
to be present for the discussion at the November board meeting.
3. The board approved a policy statement for announcements on TGE Mail, a copy of which is attached fyi.
4. We have two TGENA officers positions open for nominations, with the elections to be held at the Oct. 26th general membership meeting. I have someone who is interested in the Secretary position, but we are still looking for someone to serve as President-Elect. Please contact me or Patrick Moore if you are interested or would like more information.
5. The board has been considering the design of street/entrance monuments to be installed at the corner of Grand & Halliday, and discussed the issue at both the September and Oct. 4 board meetings. Neighbors who live on the 3500 block of Halliday have been informed, but if anyone else has an interest in this issue, please contact me for more information.
Thank you. Norah Ryan, TGE President 2005-06
