I drove down to the Lemp Brewery complex a week ago. The Pelican sign is
no longer there. I have the pictures that I took of the sign if anyone
needs them.

I hope that the Pelican sign can be restored too. The last I saw the
sign, it was in the Lemp Brewery courtyard exposed to the elements. I
made many calls to try to have someone move it to a secure location, but
to no avail. Will the restoration of the sign be part of the requirement
for restoration of the building?

Mark and others,
The shame of this situation is that the building was constructed in 1935
on
land on which two truly historic homes were originally located. In the
opinion of many local residents, the former YMCA hardly qualifies as a
historic building. As part of this project the developer, a Compton
Heights
resident, will also restore the Pelican Building to its original
configuration.
The building does not lie within Compton Heights proper, but within the
Compton Hill Historic District. As such, the project required the
approval
of the Preservation Board. For too many years, we have had a view of a
property that needs much more attention and care than it currently
receives.
As CH residents whose home lies directly behind the former YMCA
building, we
are pleased to support this project.

Hello neighbors,
I just read today that a real estate developer has
received approval from the St. Louis Preservation
Board to demolish the former YMCA building at
Shenandoah and Grand and replace the historic
structure with a neo-historic structure.
Although the building lies within Compton Heights, was
anyone in Tower Grove Heights contacted about this?
It seems like a real shame to take down such a great
building only to replace it with a strip that will
resemble the STL Bread Co. building at Arsenal and
Grand.
