One of my neighbors was mugged outside his front door at Crittenden and
Arkansas the week before Thanksgiving. That robbery was done by 2 young
black guys, about 16-18 years of age. We are in the process of having
cameras installed at our office. The cameras will be able to see across
to Riley's, the entire intersection at Arsenal and Arkansas, and north
on Arkansas. Maybe Bill Kapes will be willing to install cameras as
well. I will talk with him. Maybe the two of us could get a larger
discount together.

Don't panic, just be careful:
walking the half block from St. Elizabeth's to Riley's after the
neighborhood meeting on Thursday night, a male neighbor and I were
robbed on Arkansas just north of Arsenal. The robber had a gun,
although he didn't point it at us. He told us to give him money, I gave
him some money, and he ran off to the north. It was a little after 9pm.
The robber was fairly tall (six feet?), medium-complexioned black man
with pronouced cheekbones and close cut hair (or possibly no hair). I
think he had a little beard maybe. He'd been standing or walking on the
west side of Arkansas and walked over to us from across the street.
The police responded very quickly: 2 cars there within 2 or 3 minutes.
One of the police cars was only a block away when this happened. This
is more or less why I do not support hiring a private security company
to increase patrolling in the neighborhood: a car can be very nearby,
but the chances of them actually seeing a crime take place are very
slim. Even with an extra car driving up and down the streets eight
hours a day, you increase the likelihood of catching a crime in progress
from a very slim chance to a slightly better slim chance.
For what it's worth, after more than ten years in the neighborhood this
is the first time anything even remotely like this has happened to me.
