There's often a lot of frustration expressed on this list about crime and
police response. I just wanted to share with the list that I recently called
911 about a barking dog in the alley and the police responded within minutes.
It might seem like not a big deal, but, as I told the 911 operator, I am often
awake late at night because of our 4 month old. It is usually extremely quiet
and silent in the evening hours on our block. That barking dog was very unusual
in that it was past midnight and he was just going on and on and on in a
distressed manner. The operator initially told me that barking dogs were low
priority calls, but when I explained to her that it was extremely unusual and
suspicious, she sent officers over.
They went down the alley and got out of their car and shined their flashlights
around a couple of backyards. The barking stopped. An officer called me and
told me they didn't find any thing suspicious but they'd stick around for a
while just to be sure, and that if I saw or heard anything usual, to call back.
It's encouraging to me to get such a helpful, quick response from calling 911.
I believe that if something illegal was going on, they would have been able to
get there in time to make a difference.
have a nice day,
