Hi everyone - I wanted to let you know about a new program at KDHX
Community Media that the Neighborhood might be interested in. KDHX
has done community classes in audio and video production for quite
some time. Starting at the beginning of the year, we revamped our
education efforts into more community-focused, project-based
training. The way it works is that students sign up for free five-
week classes to learn the basics of video production. Our topics for
the class are St. Louis neighborhoods. Each class is assigned a
neighborhood and they spend the next few weeks learning about the
history, features, architecture, interesting residents, cultural
offerings, etc. about that neighborhood. They then produce 2-3
minute short video pieces about a topic in that neighborhood. the
video pieces are shown on our TV channels 21 & 22, posted on our
website and made available to the neighborhood association in DVD and
web formats for their use. We are also planning to do a public
screening once a quarter to show all of the short pieces produced on
different neighborhoods during the quarter.
The first two class sessions focused on Old North St. Louis and
Clifton Heights. We will be working with the Gate District in our
April Classes and the Academy/Sherman Park neighborhood in May. We
currently need a neighborhood for our class that starts March 22.
The commitment for the neighborhood is for a representative to come
talk to the class on the second week (March 29). The class will ask
questions based on research they started in the first week and will
make choices on the topics they want to cover in their videos. The
neighborhood representative would then be available to answer
questions via e-mail and to help with introductions for interviews as
needed.
We would love to work with Tower Grove East for our March class. If
you are interested, please contact me off list and I can give you
additional information.
PS - if you are interested in participating in a class as a student,
you can call Korinne Fischer at 314-361-8870 x 221 for details. And,
if a group of residents want to do a more in-depth video about your
own neighborhood, we are setting up intermediate classes for that
purpose. We're encouraging beginning students to discover a new
neighborhood, then form an intermediate class to work more in depth
on their own.
