I wonder if a bunch of us contacted this parent company they might
re-consider and try to putting in one of their upscale "Apple Markets".
Might be worth us all sending e-mails or letters to their officers.  Here's
the contact info as well as a draft.  Of course, variety is the spice of
life.  Feel free to edit the letter for a more personal feel.

Dear _________________,
We recently learned of Associated Wholesale Grocers intention to open a new
store in St. Louis City on Grand Avenue.  We are very happy that you chose
our neighborhood for your store.  We fear, however, that you misread the
nature of the neighborhood.  Instead of the discount ALPS store, your
company might be better served putting in an upscale "Apple Market".
The past decade has seen enormous amounts of renovation and regentrification
in the area. This growth continues with many buildings, old and new,
converting to condominiums while other multi-unit buildings are being
converted to single family homes. This wealthier clientele will only
increase over the next few years. In addition, there is a glaring absence of
upscale markets, not only in the neighborhood but in the larger south city
area.  Many of these would-be customers now travel far out of their way to
buy high end good quality groceries and produce.
As you may know, for many years now multiple owners have tried running a
discount grocery at the same location on Grand.  None of them has lasted
more than a couple years.
Please reconsider your choice of store for this location.
