In addition to the $500 scholarships for young women graduating high
school that I recently announced (May 1 deadline), here are a couple of
other special announcements that involve household finances:

IRS Stimulus Package
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, if you made
at least $3,000 in 2007, including low-income workers, and recipients of
Social Security and veterans' benefits, you qualify to receive up to $600
from the IRS.

In order to receive your payment, you must submit a tax return, even if
you normally don't. There are a number of ways to file:
Complete a 1040 or 1040A paper form
Use IRS "e-file" http://www.irs.gov/efile/
Locate a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site near you for free
tax return filing. Call 1-800-906-9887.

Mortgage Crisis Hotline
Here in Missouri and all across the United States, homeowners are
experiencing the effects of costly monthly mortgage payments. Below are
some links and numbers of services that can provide useful information to
those who find themselves struggling. On April 3, the Missouri House gave
final approval to House Committee Substitute for House Bill 2188 to
create civil and criminal penalties for individuals committing mortgage
fraud. If passed by the Senate, this would be a tiny step forward, but
much more is needed.

The MyMoney.gov website at http://www.mymoney.gov/ and HOPE NOW hotline
(1-888-995-HOPE) offer consumers access to HUD-approved credit
counselors. These counselors will provide important resources for
struggling homeowners affected by adjustable rate mortgages which have
reset to much higher monthly payments, or those individuals who find
themselves in homes that are now worth less than they owe on the
mortgage.

The Federal Reserve Board also offers foreclosure resources for
consumers on its website at www.federalreserve.gov/pubs/foreclosure.
Please share this useful information with anyone you know who has been
affected by recent high mortgage rates.
