[TGE-mail] shenandoah school closing

Neighbors,
As per Anne Moore's latest update, the SLPS is apparently planning on closing Shenandoah School next year. Though disappointing news (in my opinion) I am excited about the prospect for re-development, especially considering that the building is eligible for historic rehabilitation tax credits. I would strongly encourage the neighborhood to get involved with trying to find a potential buyer/developer (maybe even a charter school?) for the building, and also to prepare to keep a watchful eye on the property while it is vacant. An empty building of this size, if improperly secured and monitored, can quickly become a haven for crime. We all need to make sure that the SLPS knows that we are watching it and that we will not indefinitely tolerate a vacant eyesore in our midst. The school building is truly an asset for our neighborhood and should be regarded as such. If the school is quickly re-developed and put to good use, the neighborhood will win. If the building sits vacant,
breeding crime and depreciating property values, the neighborhood will certainly lose.
